A memorial was made for James and Lily Potter sometime after their death on 31 October, 1981[1]. It was a large stone statue depicting a messy-haired and bespectacled James, a very pretty and long-haired Lily, and a smiling, scarless baby Harry[1].

When approached from a distance or by a Muggle, however, the statue was disguised as an obelisk embellished with a list of the names of those who had died in a war[1].

On Christmas Eve of 1997, Harry Potter and Hermione Granger visited Godric's Hollow where the statue was built, in order that they could visit the actual graves of James and Lily; all three of the statue's heads were covered in snow, like fluffy caps[1]. It surprised Harry to see him looking happy and without his famous lightning-bolt scar[1].
